Dongzhi Festival 21/12/12

The Dōngzhì Festival or Winter Solstice Festival (Chinese: 冬至; pinyin: Dōngzhì; literally "the Extreme of Winter") is one of the most important festivals celebrated by the Chinese and other East Asians during the Dongzhi solar term (winter solstice) on or around December 22 when sunshine is weakest and daylight shortest. It occurred on December 21 (East Asia time) in 2012.
The origins of this festival can be traced back to the yin and yang philosophy of balance and harmony in the cosmos. After this celebration, there will be days with longer daylight hours and therefore an increase in positive energy flowing in. The philosophical significance of this is symbolized by the I Ching hexagram  (, "Returning").
   Traditional Activities
Traditionally, the Dongzhi Festival is also a time for the family to get together. One activity that occurs during these get togethers (especially in the southern parts of China and in Chinese communities overseas) is the making and eating of tangyuan (湯圓) or balls of glutinuous rice, which symbolize reunion. Tangyuan are made of glutinuous rice flour and sometimes brightly coloured. Each family member receives at least one largetangyuan in addition to several small ones. The flour balls may be plain or stuffed. They are cooked in a sweet soup or savoury broth with both the ball and the soup/broth served in one bowl. It is also often served with a mildly alcoholic unfiltered rice wine containing whole grains of glutinous rice (and often also Sweet Osmanthus flowers), called jiuniang.
In northern China, people typically eat dumplings on Dongzhi. It is said to have originated from Zhang Zhongjing in the Han Dynasty. On one cold winter day, he saw the poor suffering from chilblains on their ears. Feeling sympathetic, he ordered his apprentices to make dumplings with lamb and other ingredients, and distribute them among the poor to keep them warm, to keep their ears from getting chilblains. Since the dumplings were shaped like ears, Zhang named the dish "qùhán jiāoěr tāng" (祛寒嬌耳湯) or dumpling soup that expels the cold. From that time on, it has been a tradition to eat dumplings on the day of Dongzhi.
Old traditions also require people with the same surname or from the same clan to gather at their ancestral temples to worship on this day. There is always a grand reunion dinner following the sacrificial ceremony.
The festive food is also a reminder that we are now a year older and should behave better in the coming year. Even today, many Chinese around the world, especially the elderly, still insist that one is "a year older" right after the Dongzhi celebration instead of waiting for the Chinese New Year.

BENIFITS OF GREEN TEA POWDER

Green tea has become a popular drink as it has been implicated in reducing the risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke, and high cholesterol. The health benefits are out there, but drinking green tea isn't your only alternative. The popularity of green tea inspired many companies to provide alternative means of getting the benefits of green tea. At many Asian grocers, you will find green tea flavored gummy bears, green tea flavored ice cream, and green tea cookies. However, as with many packaged and processed foods, the amount of the 'good stuff' can be dubious. The good news is it is easy to incorporate more green tea into your daily life with green tea powder.
Green tea powder is not a new innovation. The Japanese tea ceremony is based on matcha, a specialized green tea powder. Green tea power is as it sounds, ground up green tea leaves, thus it maintains a rich green color. You can purchase green tea powder online or at most Japanese or Chinese grocers.
Food:
With green tea powder, you can add the benefits of green tea to any food. Like tea leaves, it can be add to hot water for instant green tea. You can also shake up your exercise but adding a small amount of green tea powder to bottled water. For a quick and healthy dessert, you can mix in a teaspoon full of green tea powder to non-fat yogurt or ice cream. You can also add a spoon full to a smoothie for an extra healthy kick.
It is also suitable for baking. Just take your favorite cake or cookie recipe and add a teaspoon of green tea powder into the mix before baking. Because of its rich color, you can also use it instead of food coloring to decorate certain foods.

Skin Treatment:
The skin is the largest organ on our body. The benefits of green tea include rejuvenation of skin cells and reduction of inflammation and cancer. It does not, however, directly block UV rays. Thus, good protection against the sun should include a good sun block with green tea. They can work together to minimize any possible sun damage and subsequent skin tumors.
There are several ways to use green tea powder with your sun block (take note, however, to use zinc oxide-based sunscreens as other sunscreen chemical might react with green tea). You can keep fill a salt dispenser with green tea powder and add a little to your sunscreen before putting it on.

You can also add it to your skin treatment routines. Making a green tea mask is easy with green tea powder. Just use two teaspoon full of powder and add a teaspoon of warm water to bring out the flavonoids. You can adjust the thickness by mixing in more or less water. Because green tea lacks the irritating chemicals such as alpha hydroxy and glycolic acid, you won't have to worry about leaving the mask on your face for too long. In fact, because green tea has anti-inflammatory components, it will reduce the redness caused by facial peels and acidic facials.

How to Teach Your Child to Concentrate

The first thing you want to do is make your child aware of what concentration is, how to recognize the feelings he gets when he is concentrating, and how to recognize what happens when his concentration is broken.
Before you start talking to your child about these things, spend a few days observing him. Try to answer these quetions:
v  What is my child doing when he seems to be concentrating hard?
v  How long does he spend on these activities at a time?
v  How easy is it to distract him during these periods of concentration? If I speak quietly to him, does he hear me?
Once you have a basic understanding of your child's patterns of concentration, you can usefully start talking to him about it. In order to explain to your child what concentration is, first help him to recognize concentration in others:
ü  "Look at Daddy reading the paper. He looks like he is concentrating really hard! Did you see just now I asked him if he wants a coffee, and he just went "hmmm" - he can hardly hear me, because he is concentrating so hard!"
ü  "See the cat on the lawn, what's he looking at? Do you think he's after mice? See how he is concentrating all of his attention on the grass under the bush? Cats are very good hunters, because they can concentrate so well."
ü  "Look at your baby sister eating her dinner. She is still learning to use her spoon; she is concentrating very hard on getting her food in her mouth! We learn well when we are concentrating."

野柳地质公园 YEHLIU GEOPARK

Yehliu (Chinese野柳; pinyin:Yěliǔ) is a cape on the north coast of
Taiwan in the town of Wanli between Taipei and Keelung
The cape, known by geologists as the Yehliu Promontory, forms part of the Taliao Miocene Formation. It stretches approximately 1,700 meters into the ocean and was formed as geological forces pushed Datun Mountain (大屯山) out of the sea.
A distinctive feature of the cape is the hoodoo stones that dot its surface. These shapes can be viewed at the Yeliu Geopark operated by the North Coast and Guanyinshan National Science Area Administration. A number of rock formations have been given imaginative names based on their shapes. The most well-known is the "The Queen's Head" (女王頭), an iconic image in Taiwan and an unofficial emblem for the town of Wanli. Other formations include "The Fairy Shoe", "The Bee Hive", "The Ginger Rocks" and "The Sea Candles."

AN IDEAL ROOMATE

Living far away from home for higher education in colleges or universities, many students have to seek for a convenience accommodations. With the changes in the environment, students have to adapt themselves with it. One of the changes is living or shares their rooms with others whom they never meet before.
In this society, there are many kinds of peoples carry with different characteristics and personalities. It is good to have an ideal roommate but it is difficult to get along with a new roommate who comes from a different background, cultures and religion.
Firstly, a good roommate should be understood. Students will face a lot of stressful things in adapting their life in a new environment or handling their academics subjects in their studies. It is ideal to have a roommate who have many things in common and are considerate and understanding. Therefore, they can communicate, share and learn with each other in a comfortable and relax environment. For example, students would like to study in a silence place. It would be very annoyed and disturbed if their roommates often chit chat or listen to loud music and will easily cause lots of conflicts and arguments.
Secondly, honesty and responsibility are two other good characteristics of an ideal roommate. Trustworthy is the most important to all of the people in this society. It is easy for a student to share a room with a stranger, but once they have lost the trust at their roommate, they will never rest assured. Therefore, to prevent missing of the goods and assets, they have to be aware and take good care of it instead of blaming or suspect each other.
Responsibility is also one of the habits which students must practice in their daily life. It is very difficult to live with a lazy and irresponsible roommate. Just imagine if we live with roommates who never do chores, tidy up their studying corner or bed, or cleaning a bathroom, it will cause a lot of problems and arguments. Some more, students can’t even concentrate on their studies in a messy and uncomfortable room. To practice the habits of responsibility and to avoid such incident, students have to be self-discipline and do a cleaning schedule, in order to take turns to keep the room clean and tidy.

Third, a good roommate should be friendly and welcoming. It is good to have a positive and cheerful friend in our life. No doubt, they will lets us feel relax and comfortable. It is also good to have a friend which have common interest among themselves, so that they will feel their life become meaningful, colorful and memorable. A friend with positive thinking can help a lot too. Here is one of the example, students will feel unhappy and helpless when they face some difficult issue. So, with a positive thinker, they will try to enlighten and understand their friends. They also willing to provide their opinions or share their experiences with their friends as a reference, as it may help to solve their difficulties too.
A considerate roommate makes students feel at home. Homesick is the most common thing which we can see from students who live far away from family or siblings. For students, they will desire for care and love from each other. Just an example, when they are sick, they will feel comfort and thankful when they are under a good care of their roommates. Other than that, a good and generous roommate can be a good listener too. They can share their happiness or hardship together. Sometimes, students might have some minor mistakes on their daily life, so students will need a generous roommate to forgive them and to ensure that the mistake wouldn’t be repeated.
Being an ideal roommate with students, everything will become much better and smooth. Why do I say so? This is because, when students face different kind of obstacles or difficult situations in their life or academic subjects, with their assist, caring and advice, they can solve their problems in an easy way within a very short term.
Conclusion, an ideal roommate should be an understanding, trustworthy, responsibility and considerate person. No doubt, students will find a lot of troublesome and difficulties by living with a new roommate at the first time. However, it is not till the end. As the time flies, they will well-known each other by understanding their family background, through their lifestyle, cultures, religions and so on. From here, they can find out that, a good partner will overcome and face every single thing or difficulties in their life. Furthermore, they will appreciate what they have gain in their life for the years of studies and living with a strangers. The most they will never regret which they have owned a memorable and value friendship in their life.
